The Dare – Natasha Preston

First and foremost: what in the snickerdoodle monkey poo was this?!

I LOVED this one! The tension, the slowly unraveling characters, the suspense! I adored it all!

I so get Marley and Rhett. I have people I was friends with in middle school who I can’t stand anymore. She is so real for that.

Okay, now onto the actual story!

I love this trope so much: kid gets away with everything so they amp it up for parental attention. Rhett has to try harder though, because he has older brothers to outdo too.

The progession of pranks to dares is insane. Also, I cannot be the only one who thought Atlas cheated on Marley with Luce. I was waiting for Rhett to tell Marley that the entire time.

I genuinely don’t have much to say about this book. I’m in awe and shocked about the ending.

Like, it had to end that way. It made sense. But I still almost cried. Rhett deserved it, but I was also rooting for him and Marley to get together the whole time.

And the way Jesse was treating her! And Luce and Atlas defending it! If I was her, I’d have dumped Atlas the second he implied it was my fault. I’m so curious about how long he planned on breaking up with her.

He lied about so much, how long was he lying about his feelings for her? Obviously, the big secret he didn’t want Rhett to share was him lying about college, but what about Luce?

I’m still stuck on Rhett being arrested at the end. Like, gah! Why?! I yearn for a sequel.

And Luce dying! She totally had it coming, and I didn’t feel too bad for her, but I still hate that she had to die, especially in front of Marley. Betrayal or not, it’s gotta suck watching someone you trusted with your life die in front of you, unable to help.

Natasha Preston has an obsession with killing best friends in front of the main character, and I am equal parts here for it and begging her to stop.

And George! I didn’t see his plotline coming at all. I was feeling awful for him the whole time, imagining how hard it must be to lose the only family you had left. And then he orchestrated the whole thing!

And, sorry, Marley getting away scot-free? Nope! She deserves some punishment, and living with the guilt of it forever isn’t enough. She took someone’s life, and another person died because of the choices made by her and her friends (yes, Jesse killed Ruthie, but Marley shared her suspicions KNOWING Jesse couldn’t be trusted). George almost died because she kept telling the people who were exhibiting very deranged behavior things.

This story has me feeling all sorts of emotions. In moments like this, I wish Preston would write sequels to her stories. I can’t even formulate the words to properly react! I may have to come back and review again, because I’m just… so shocked.

All in all, I loved this one, and will definitely be rereading.
