A super interesting read! I didn’t like Summer in the beginning, especially after how flippant she seemed about Rachel missing. I thought she was a bit obnoxious and a bad friend.
I’d say you can definitely tell Preston started by writing on Wattpad, but we all start somewhere! I personally started on Google Docs, but Wattpad was where I began to read when I realized people could take stories and continue them.
Clover’s character was so fascinating to me, especially when it alternated between his POV and Summer’s. Seeing how she was worried she wasn’t hiding her hatred very well and then seeing how he saw it was shyness was such a shock, honestly.
I know she existed purely to die, but Violet was my favorite, her death hit me so hard. I felt so bad for Summer, watching Jennifer die in front of her knowing she could have done something.
Rose was so annoying at first, but once it was revealed she and Clover had a past, it made a lot more sense why she was so attached to him. She knew him as Colin before she knew him as Clover, and it was cool to understand her more.
Speaking of Clover! His slow descent into madness! The way there was a national search for Summer, and he went to help search to divert suspicion, but it ended up being his undoing? It hit me so hard. I honestly felt bad for him. Sure, he was crazy, but it was his mom’s fault. I think had she been okay, he wouldn’t have the viewpoints and ideals he had, especially since he truly believed he was doing what was best. I hated him, but I also felt so bad for him at the same time.
A lot of people hated the book, which I get, as there were times I was so annoyed, but in the end, it was a great read! Toawrds the end, I didn’t want to put the book down. It was cliche, but that’s what made it fun! I’m not a horror fan, so the low-stakes, you-know-what’s-coming horror novels are my jam! Die hard horror fans would hate it, but for people like me looking for a scary story before bed that will keep you up for a bit but won’t terrify you completely, The Cellar is an amazing option.
